What Shouldn’t You Do When Wearing or Caring for Your Wig

Wigs can be vital for helping women (and men) regain their confidence, feel good about the way they look, and overcome a whole host of scalp and hair issues. If you’re in the Toronto area and looking for expert advice on wig care, consider visiting a reputable wig store in Toronto, where professionals can offer guidance on how to keep your wig looking fresh and natural. But to keep a wig looking its best, there are a few things you absolutely shouldn’t do when wearing and caring for it:

Use regular shampoo and styling products.

It’s really important to buy shampoos, conditioners, and styling products that are designed specifically for wigs, as regular products tend to weigh the strands down, making them look lifeless and lacklustre.

Use a blow dryer or curling iron.

Synthetic wigs will be permanently ruined if you use heated styling tools on them. On the other hand, human hair wigs can tolerate some heat styling if you take the proper precautions. Always apply a heat protectant spray beforehand and use the lowest effective heat setting to minimize damage.

Use a regular brush.

You might be surprised to learn that regular brushes or combs can cause considerable damage to the delicate strands of a wig as they stretch the fibres and cause irreversible damage. In some instances, the hair mat can even fall out. So, when brushing your synthetic or human hair wig, always use a special wig brush or a comb with wide teeth.

Keep your wig on a Styrofoam head.

Forcing a wig onto a Styrofoam head will stretch the cap and cause damage to the wig’s foundation. Rather use a collapsible wig stand or a blockhead made of canvas to help maintain a shape that fits your head perfectly. You can find these easily online and you may find that your local wig store sells them too.

Scrub roughly when washing or drying.

The intricate way in which a wig is made won’t hold up well to aggressive scrubbing when shampooing or drying. Never wring it out, either. Instead, gently pat it dry with a towel to remove excess water and hang it on an appropriate stand to dry naturally in the air.

Swim while wearing it.

Both saltwater and chlorine have a habit of stripping hair of its moisture, leaving it looking and feeling dry and brittle. If you do want to swim while wearing a wig, however, try wearing a swim cap to protect your locks.

Barbecue

Synthetic wigs can melt when exposed to intense heat, such as that emitted from a barbecue, while human hair wigs can easily become frizzy, dry, and brittle. Avoid going too close to the oven, stove, or barbecue while wearing your wig, and where possible, avoid it being inside a warm car for too long.

You can still wear your wig in the sun, though; just take steps to protect it by wearing a sun hat or wrapping a pretty scarf around your head.

Human hair wigs in Toronto deserve to be protected so that you can look your best whenever wearing one. Fortunately, by avoiding the mistakes above, you can easily and conveniently do exactly that.
